AREA 16 CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES - BRIDGE THE GAP-INMATE

The Bridge the Gap Committee of Area 16 (Georgia) is made up of Alcoholics Anonymous members from across the state. The program provides inmates with a contact, prior to their release, who will help them make the transition from A.A. meetings on the inside to A.A. in the community.

We believe that the most important time in an inmate’s recovery is the first 24 to 48 hours after his or her release. It is our collective experience in A.A. that sobriety is vital to staying out of prison in the future. Regular attendance at A.A. meetings is vital to sobriety and should begin the day the inmate is released. It is no different for those of us in A.A. who has not been incarcerated.

Neither Bridge the Gap nor Alcoholics Anonymous provides housing, food, clothing, job, money or other welfare or social services. The role of the volunteer is to take the newly released inmate to an A.A. meeting on the outside. (Male contacts will be assigned to male inmates, females to females.) Our primary purpose is to stay sober, and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety.

HOW BRIDGE THE GAP WORKS

  1. The inmate requests a Bridge the Gap application, and fills out the information form.
  2. The inmate mails the application to Bridge the Gap.
  3. The Bridge the Gap coordinator will make contact with an A.A. volunteer in the area where the inmate will be released, providing him or her with the inmate’s information.
  4. If time allows, the volunteer will contact the inmate by mail, and provide the inmate with information on A.A. in the community where he or she will be released.
  5. It is the inmate’s responsibility to notify the A.A. volunteer upon release, using the information that the volunteer has provided to the inmate.
