FAQs about volunteering:
Do I have to be registered for the convention in order to volunteer?
YES Volunteers must be registered attendees. However, you can sign-up to volunteer before you have registered for the convention. Volunteers should be registered by Tuesday, June 30 to pick up their volunteer shirts. To register online go to www.aa.org and click on the International Convention link at the top.
Why do I have to pay a registration fee?
Self-support Attendance at this special celebration is voluntary and, as responsible AA members, we pay our own way. The International Convention is paid for by those AAs who participate in it
How long are the volunteer shifts?
Varies: Typically 2 to 4 hours. Some service positions offer shorter shifts and some a little longer. Please check with the subcommittee that interests you.
When will I be able to sign up for a shift on a specific day and time?
COMING SOON! We are putting the final touches on the schedules now. You will be notified by email when they are available. Please make sure that your email is correct in Volunteer Hub.
What about parking and transportation?
Up to you, consider the crowds July 4th weekend in downtown Atlanta. If you are not staying downtown, you might want to consider carpooling or using MARTA.
Will we have any kind of orientation or training?
Glad you asked! There will be a Volunteer Orientation & Training Meeting held on Sunday, May 17, 2015 from 2pm until 5pm, in the Georgia Ballroom at GWCC.
Is the training event required?
We have been asked if volunteers are required to attend this training in person. The answer is “no”. We will develop some online training materials that will be made available shortly after the training event. However, this event will be much more comprehensive than any materials we can post online, so we strongly encourage as many as possible to attend.
Will I miss the convention if I volunteer?
We have heard some concerns from volunteers wondering whether they will “miss the convention” if they volunteer. Our response: You will be in the middle of it! Shifts are coordinated so that NO ONE will miss the big main meetings in the Georgia Dome on Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday morning. Otherwise, the program schedule includes multiple meetings and workshops held concurrently during each day. It is impossible for anyone to attend them all! Attendees will be coming and going all day and most volunteer shifts are scheduled for portions of this time. So, you may miss few daytime meetings or workshops, but you will certainly be able to attend many more.
Can I sign up for more than one service area?
You are completely welcome to sign up for more than one service area! However, if you checked multiple boxes when you initially registered on VolunteerHub, and you know that you are no longer interested in committing to one or more of those volunteer services, please make adjustments to your profile. This helps us to calculate the number of volunteers more accurately for each service area. You can do this by signing into VolunteerHub, clicking “Your Account”, and checking or unchecking boxes to adjust your selections.
